First up, catch up with Creative Strategist, Malcolm Ché, on his journey to events and where he sees the industry going…
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Johannesburg and recently moved over to Lisbon.
What’s your favourite thing about working in this industry?
The reason I originally got into television was because I was interested in creating personal messages through broadcast media and finding that inflection point between talking down to people and actually inviting them in.
The first time I tried virtual reality, it was a revelation. VR isn’t shouting at people, it’s inviting people into the narrative.
That, for me, is what events do very well. It’s not top-down, condescending and telling you what to do – it’s an invitation to participate.
Is there an industry topic or trend you are particularly excited by?
There’s a lot of technology that’s gone through a hype cycle in the last couple of years – blockchain, NFTs, the Metaverse, and the fourth industrial revolution, for example. That hype-mongering has gone through its cycle and gone into a trough – I call it the trough of usability.
It’s going to be interesting to see where spatial computing (which in my opinion is a new moniker for the metaverse) is going to go over the next year.
I think spatial computing is going to be a big trend in the next year. The release of Apple’s VisionPro is an iPod moment. It’s an opportunity to build experiences that are a digital overlay over the real world which excites me because that’s what we do very well at Identity – it’s a layer of storytelling over the real world.
