The challenge

The Norwegian Government needed more than an exhibit. They needed an experience that could bring the complexity of ocean sustainability to life, making it accessible, emotionally resonant, and unmissable on the world’s biggest stage. Identity was appointed to deliver it, end-to-end, in under eight months.

Approach

Identity designed and built a 700sqm immersive journey through the ocean, from the seabed to space, without a wetsuit in sight. Augmented reality, projection mapping, architectural innovation, and special effects combined to create an interactive narrative rooted in Norway’s seafaring heritage and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability wasn’t a footnote. 80% of materials were reusable, embedding the pavilion’s message into every element of its construction.

Result

The Norway Pavilion became one of Expo 2020’s most engaging visitor experiences, drawing thousands of visitors daily across the event’s run. Identity delivered on every dimension, creative, technical, operational, and sustainable, within a challenging timeline, establishing a new benchmark for purpose-led pavilion design on the world stage.
